SARASALLY’S
NORTH COUNTRY PERSONALITIES
Logger
Harvesting timber was (and still is) a winter occupation for most North Country farmers. During the winter the horses would twitch logs instead as well as pulling plows as the logs slide much easier over snow and ice. This was rugged work snowshoeing through deep snow to fell trees with only a crosscut or buck saw. The Logger was inspired by stories of my great grandfather, grandfather and watching my dad working in the woods before I got too cold.
Wood was the main source of heat for the farm and my grandfather and great grandfather had to cut and split 25 cords of wood for the winter. Wood was also a good source of income so during the winter John Boothman oversaw 300-400 cords of wood cut each winter with just a bucksaw and axe.
This figure is wearing a hand-knit scarf and hat, plaid flannel shirt and wool pants. The Logger carries a crosscut or bucksaw and snowshoes with a cant-dog and is standing on a tree stump.
